After Henley won the opener 8-0 behind a four-hitter by Bryn Card, Phoenix was in jeopardy of dropping the second game when the Hornets came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game. But the Pirates salvaged an 8-4 victory with a four-run outburst in the seventh. "That’s what we needed most was the split," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. "That keeps us in contention." Even with the four-run lead, Hagler wasn’t able to relax on the Hornets’ final chance. Advertisement Phoenix starter Chad Walker retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before Colin Stock and Jimmy Mastroianni singled. Josh Knapp walked to load the bases for Kody Fritz, who had already doubled in each game. Fritz hit a hard grounder to second baseman Aaron Decker, who threw him out. "You can’t start breathing easy until the third out is made over there," said Hagler. Phoenix got the winning rally started when No. 9 hitter Kyle Locken walked to open the seventh. "(Locken) had a real good at-bat," said Hagler. "He fought off some good pitches to draw the walk." Dustin Smith followed with a single, and Decker walked to load the bases. The Hornets pulled starter James Nygren, and reliever Fritz hit John Goldberg to force in the first run. Walker ripped a line drive to right to score two more runs. After Josh Lorton walked to load the bases, Robert Woodward followed with a sacrifice fly. Walker and Woodward each had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates in the nightcap. In the first game, Card stymied the Pirates. The senior lefty struck out 10, picked off three runners and only faced 23 batters. "We didn’t get too much going off of (Card)," said Hagler. "He had good command and he’s focused. His slider looks like a fastball and breaks away from you." Mastroianni had a big game for the Hornets with three hits and four RBIs, while Fritz added three hits and three RBIs. For the day, Mastroianni had five hits and six RBIs. "Mastroianni punishes the ball when you make a mistake," said Hagler. "He’s also a very good defensive catcher."
