When I went to school at Oak Grove Elementary, there was quite a collection of pirate books in the classroom, and I loved to read about Blackbeard and others. My mother did not seem to mind as the pirate hat, sword and cape was an easy costume. Now, as a father of a 2-year-old on her third Halloween, she still is not giving recommendations despite her love of Clifford books and Minnie Mouse. My wife has a love for the holidays and making them extra special for our daughter, so Halloween is of course no exception. She does various other crafts with her as well such as decorating cookies and building a Halloween village for her to have in her room. We have had her previous costumes made by one of Casey’s friend's, Lauren, and this year my niece made the costume. Her first costume was as a Starbucks latte, last year she was a black kitty cat, and this year she will be a book fairy. Medford Parks and Recreation is holding a Howl-O-Ween Party at the Santo Center, 701 N. Columbus Ave., from 5- 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. There will be four bounce houses, a cupcake walk and many other games, along with candy and refreshments. Entry is free, but if you can spare a dollar or two, please do, as all proceeds will go to the “Play Everyday Scholarship Fund.” The fund helps-low income families get their children into day camps and youth sports offered by the Medford Parks and Recreation Department. We have all heard the standard information about Halloween safety, but it bears repeating. If you are handing out candy, please make sure that all candy is in individually wrapped packaging, that your walking areas and stairs are well lit, and your pathways are not obstructed with pumpkins, dead bodies, etc. If you are going trick-or-treating, please make sure that you always keep an eye on your kiddo and perhaps put an information bracelet on them, make sure that the costume is short enough so your kids do not trip, bring a flashlight, and eating prior to going out is recommended. If you are dealing with a teenager, make sure that you set a strict curfew, and keep an inventory of your eggs and shaving cream. Medford Police will be out to help ensure a good time will be had by all, and to attenuate any trouble. If you hate Halloween and want to avoid it, I would suggest turning off your porchlight and putting a “I hate Halloween” sign on your door, pull up your drawbridge (if equipped), avoid any television station that does not say it is airing College Football (Note- they will still talk about Halloween). However, if you must go out and encounter the masses that do enjoy Halloween, please drive slowly and safely in residential areas. Finally, if you are handing out candy and happen to see a book fairy, please put the finest of treats, a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, in her basket. It will be much appreciated.
