The Hawks (7-2) topped the Raiders (1-8) for the second time this season behind the burly inside play of junior forward Devina Brooks, who amassed game-highs of 22 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. SOU, which also fell to the Oakland, Calif. team 80-60 on Nov. 5, dropped its home season opener despite a 19-point, six-rebound, five-assist, four-steal performance from junior guard Courtney Bothum. "I feel we’re improving to the point that I feel our players believe in themselves and in our system, and it’s only a matter of time until we break out," Raider coach Kevin Wilson said. "Holy Names is a great team, and we played much better in every aspect of the game than we did last month (in Oakland)." Southern stayed within seven after the opening 14 minutes, but HNU used a 7-2 run over the final three minutes of the opening half to build a 40-25 halftime edge. The Hawks pushed the bulge to 19 six minutes into the second stanza before junior guard Chelsey Brock, freshman forward Krista Meeks and sophomore forward Andi Peterson made key shots in a 20-11 Raider run that cut the margin to 64-54 with 8:47 remaining. Advertisement After re-inserting its starting five, HNU sealed the game with an 8-0 spurt over the next two minutes. Senior forward Natalia Jonas scored 12 points and grabbed six offensive rebounds for the Hawks, and junior forward Tiana Davis (12) and senior reserve guard Teresa Davis (10) also reached double digits. Peterson tallied 13 points and five rebounds for the Raiders, and Meeks scored 10 points and hauled in seven rebounds in 12 game minutes. As team, SOU shot 52 percent from the field in the second half (16 of 31) after missing 21 of 31 attempts in the opening 20 minutes. HNU went 30 of 64 overall for a 47-percent efficiency. Southern Oregon returns to action next Friday at Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif. Men’s Basketball WILLAMETTE 61, SOUTHERN OREGON 57 — At Salem, second-half shooting woes doomed Southern Oregon University during a loss at Willamette University. After building a 44-36 lead with 13:11 remaining, the NAIA 16th-ranked Raiders (1-4) scored only five points over the next 10 minutes against the NCAA Div. III Bearcats (3-3). Junior All-American forward Shea Washington scored eight of his team-high 15 points in a 15-3 Raider spurt to start the second period, and he led all players with 13 rebounds. SOU junior center Jeff Williams scored nine and grabbed eight board in front of a hometown crowd. Willamette, which shot 42 percent and defeated Southern for the fourth straight year, received a 17-point, six-assist effort from guard CJ Stuvland and 15 from forward Henry Greeley.
