LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, July 5 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Protect Oregon To me, the pope’s groundbreaking encyclical, Laudato Si, was significant, not because he took up the cause of environmental activism, but rather because of the way in which he stated that climate change, social justice and economic inequality and impoverishment are all part of the same problem. Most importantly, he clearly framed this as an issue of morality, not politics. Although the pope spoke from a global perspective, I see similarities in what is going on here in Oregon with the effort to stop the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline project. The campaign to stop the LNG pipeline includes citizens from all walks of life, and of every political persuasion, who have come together to protect our homes and our way of life from large corporations who seek to profit by ignoring the needs and wants of those who live here in beautiful Oregon. So this, too, is about morality. However, to win this fight we must engage the politicians we have elected to assist us in this effort. I urge all of you to call on Gov. Kate Brown and Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden to take the moral high ground and help us to protect precious Oregon. Mark A. Newberger Ashland Huckabee is wrong The June 27 article on the recent Supreme Court decision on gay marriage included a quote from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who said, "if accepted by Congress and this president, this decision will be a serious blow to religious liberty, which is the heart of the First Amendment." Mr. Huckabee is wrong; he will be able to continue worshiping as he has in the past. The decision will, however, be a blow to members of religions who arrogantly insist that they are entitled to force their beliefs on others. Victor Mlotok Phoenix News, please Pot is  not  the most important news locally or nationally. Please just give us the changes in the law in one hundred words or less. I was surprised when another reader complained about all the pot articles. I thought I was alone. The world and even Medford has much more pressing problems than quarter-page photos of pot plants, growing lots and endless articles. A more politically balanced opinion page would seem worthwhile. Can you please cut down photo size of opinion cartoons and give us something worthwhile to read? Many times these cartoons take up a third of a page. The Mail Tribune is nearing the point of irrelevance to the local population to those of us who want to be better informed. Bob Baker Medford Stop misleading public I just want to help readers get one thing straight: Crop seed farming differs from commodity crop farming in that buyers require zero GMO contamination, and those farmers (not just"organic" seed growers) have not been getting due protections from a U.S. Agriculture Department corrupted by bringing biotech personnel in over the heads of staff scientists to override safety studies, allow huge increases of poisons per acre, and even suppress university studies demonstrating that GMOs fail farmers in yields and profitability. Now, by continuing to mislead the public with unsubstantiated (if not absurd) ideas about what the crop ban would cost taxpayers, the county administrator could better serve the public by examining the dollar figures that two farmers, who recently took up GMO alfalfa, want from taxpayers — amounts that defy common sense.
