North gains upper hand in opener GRANTS PASS - Moral victories don't cut it for Grants Pass when it plays Southern Oregon Conference softball powerhouse North Medford. North Medford tripped the Cavers 3-2 and 2-1 in an SOC-opening twin bill between the two league favorites Tuesday. "We're way past the point of being happy to play North Medford close," said Grants Pass coach Clay Rounsaville, whose team was picked to finish second behind North in a preseason poll. "We fully expected to beat them." North (5-1, 2-0 SOC) rallied to score two runs in the top of the seventh for the win in Game 1. Deni Rowley scored the eventual game-winner on an RBI single by Beth Morrill, who finished with two hits. Claire Highfield and Justine Cerda each had two hits for the Cavers (7-4, 0-2 SOC). In the nightcap, North's Corey Whitaker singled and made her way to third in the seventh with the teams tied at 1-1. Megan Louie followed with a suicide squeeze bunt to push home Whitaker. "What I was really proud of was the way the kids came back," said Tornado coach Larry Binney, "especially, in the first game with our backs to the wall."
