McCall Please settle an argument. One friend says C.W. McCall is a country singer. The other says it was a New Age band. Who’s right? — Dave E., Central Point Well Dave, we’ll show our wisdom by cutting your baby in half. "C.W. McCall" was credited with the 1976 hit song "Convoy," a country ditty that also crossed over to become a pop hit. But there was no person named C.W. McCall. That was the nom de chanteur of Bill Fries, an ad man from Omaha, Neb. Advertisement Fries created the character of C.W. for a series of TV commercials for a bread company. C.W. became so popular a record album was released titled "Wolf Creek Pass." "Convoy" was from C.W.’s second album. Fries wrote the words, and the music was provided by Chip Davis, who would go on to fame as the New Age act Mannheim Steamroller. On tour, Fries sang, and Davis did the music along with an eclectic mix of sidemen he called the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant Boys. So there you go. Guess C.W. was the first New Age/country star.
