Hale Elementary School. The Eagle Point school district plans to build the new elementary school with insurance money it received after most of Eagle Point Middle School burned in August 2002. The board took the first step to selecting a company to oversee the construction project last week. They authorized the district to choose a construction management and general contracting company without sending the project to bid. Instead the district will pick a company based on submitted proposals and work out a contract with a set price and a guaranteed profit for the company, said Greg Lecuyer, the district’s finance director. Having a single company work as construction manager and contractor should save the district time and money, Lecuyer said. Advertisement The new school, at 215 E. Main St., will replace Little Butte Elementary and should open by fall 2006, he said. Officials haven’t decided yet what to do with the Little Butte building, he said. The district decided to build an elementary school with its insurance settlement last spring on the advice of a committee of school officials and community members who had studied how the district might grow, he said. At the time of the fire, the district had bond money, approved in November 2000, to build two new middle schools. One was already under construction. The old middle school was slated for demolition after those projects were complete. Officials had considered renovating existing elementary schools, but instead opted to build. The district got a $5 million insurance settlement last year, but it’s still working with its insurance company to get the entire construction cost, estimated at between $8 million and $9 million, covered, Lecuyer said. Dull Olson Weekes Architects, a Portland-based firm, has designed a 58,000-square-foot building that can accommodate 600 students, Lecuyer said. Now the board wants to choose a construction manager and general contractor. It has already called for proposals from companies and hopes to select one in December. A new Grants Pass High School and Josephine County Jail were built using the no-bid, construction-management, general-contracting process, Lecuyer said.
