Highlights for the Raider men are wins by Dylan Alexander in the 5,000 and Gabe Derilo in the 100. UP NEXT : NAIA nationals, May 21-23, Gulf Shores, Ala. » Social News ASHLAND — Grier Gatlin labored to describe the performance of his star athlete. The Southern Oregon University track and field coach needn't have fretted. There were visuals galore of Amelia Maguin's gutsiness Saturday at the Cascade Conference championships, which the Raiders hosted. There was a picture of her easing to the 400-meter hurdles title, conserving energy as best she could because of a busy workload on a hot spring afternoon. And of her straining mightily, unsuccessfully, soon after as she tried to overtake a rival in the 200. Of her accepting that runner-up award. Of her getting sick just steps away from the podium. It, like all else she did, was on full display to those in the grandstands. Then, astonishingly, there was the sight of her taking the baton on the final leg of the 4x400 relay, the last event, and picking off nearly every other runner in the field save for one. The last two she caught just strides from the finish line, a circumstance that not only thrilled said fans, but provided them a far more appealing image. And one last picture: of her receiving the award for the top female track athlete of the meet. This she easily put into words. "I'm really happy," said the senior from Fernley, Nev. "Honestly, I was really looking forward to this meet. I gave it my all, and I'm happy that I got it." The Raider men's team was hoping to share the spotlight with Maguin by winning its third straight conference crown. To do it at home as SOU staged the championships for the first time since 2003 would be all the better. It wasn't to be. Eastern Oregon scored points where it wasn't expected to, and SOU didn't, enabling the former to capture its first conference crown in 12 years — or the last time the Raiders hosted. In a team race that came down to the final event, the long relay, the Mountaineers had 165 points, Concordia 160 and Southern Oregon 158. The top three had never been closer in the meet's 21 years. "We had some good individual performances," said Gatlin, "but overall it was a pretty disappointing day. Certainly, congratulations to Eastern on the guys' side. They had guys step up in places on the form sheet coming in who didn't have any points and got points. We had guys on the form sheet getting points that didn't. Credit them. We weren't at our best when we needed to be." He cited the shot put and triple jump as keys for Eastern; the 5,000 was where the Raiders hurt themselves the most, he said. Among the highlights for the men were track victories by fifth-seeded Gabe Derilo in the 100 and Dylan Alexander in the 5,000. Zach Boyd-Helm was second in the race of the day, the 800, and former South Medford sprinter Hayden Saparto was runner-up in the 100. Danny Parks placed third in the shot put to go with a victory in the discus and a third in the hammer the day before. It was the Maguin show for the SOU women, who placed fourth with 96 points. College of Idaho claimed its third straight crown with 180, followed by Concordia (153) and Eastern Oregon (106). Maguin's victory in her specialty, the 400 hurdles, looked comfortable. She set meet records in the event the previous two years, was runner-up at nationals the last two years and owns the nation's best time. She clocked 1:00.02 Saturday. It was effortless and only four-tenths of a second off her meet mark. "Usually I go all out for the whole race," said Maguin, who captured the 400 and 100 hurdle titles Friday. The 200 was only 20 minutes after the long hurdles, "so I just tried to get through five hurdles at my normal speed, which is a certain amount of steps between hurdles, then coast the rest of the way, as long as no one was beating me." In the 200, she was bested by College of Idaho's Nichole DeGrange, who ran 25.08 seconds to Maguin's 25.17. The heat and exertion got to Maguin immediately after the awards were dispensed. "That's never happened before," said Maguin. She returned for the scintillating final leg of the 4x400 relay, willing the Raiders to second place with a time of 3:57.02. College of Idaho set a meet mark of 3:49.95. Gatlin was left relatively speechless. "For 10 minutes before that she was at the other end of the track, literally throwing up into a trash can," he said, "and she could barely walk. I don't know what it is about those last 75 meters, there's something that goes on in that little body of hers, something I don't know if you can coach it. I don't know what it is. Maybe a psychiatrist could figure it out." In 15 years of coaching, he said, Maguin is the most competitive person he's been around, regardless of gender or discipline. There were others in the Raider camp who showed fortitude. Alexander did so, even if the 5,000 was disappointing for the SOU men. The Raiders had four of the top six seeds but managed only two points apart from Alexander's 10 for winning. The junior was aware of the tight team race. "That was definitely on my mind," he said. "It was a motivating factor." Alexander was forced to lead more than he wanted but ultimately put on a big surge in the final 150 meters to overhaul Isaac Updike of Eastern Oregon. Alexander's time was 14:49.76 to Updike's 14:50.14. "I've been getting more and more confident in my kick," said Alexander. "I knew that if it came down to the very end, it would be close. I had a feeling I might be able to pull something off." The 800 featured last year's national champion, Hans Roelle of Eastern Oregon, and Boyd-Helm, who was national runner-up two years ago — one spot ahead of Roelle. Boyd-Helm didn’t run it last year because of injury. "There were a bunch of other guys, too," said Boyd-Helm. "It definitely could have been anybody's race." Concordia's Austin Collins went out fast and led by 10-plus meters at the halfway point. But Boyd-Helm reeled him in just before the final turn. "I knew I'd be able to catch him because he was breaking the wind for everyone," said Boyd-Helm. "It was just a matter of time." Boyd-Helm hoped he went early enough to take the starch out of Roelle and his "ferocious kick." But Roelle nudged past him, winning in 1:51.58 to Boyd-Helm's 1:52.14. "I'm disappointed I didn't get the win," said Boyd-Helm, "but I think I did everything I could have to put myself in position to win it." Saparto competed at South Medford through his junior year, then moved to Houston as a senior. When it came time to pick a college, he yearned to return to the Rogue Valley. "I love this place," he said. "I love southern Oregon. It's hard to see flat, brown dirt forever." He gave a strong showing in the 100, placing second in 10.87 seconds to teammate Derilo's 10.82. Former Rogue River athlete Seth Gretz was second in the pole vault for Oregon Tech, clearing 14-9.
