Your inspiring response allowed us to make the holiday season a little brighter — and winter a little warmer — for some of the most vulnerable children, teens and parents in Jackson County. I came out of the Jackson County “Justice” Court broken by my disappointment that justice and doing the right thing doesn’t matter. The judge had the opportunity to dismiss a ticket that I received for unlawful parking in disabled parking space, and he didn’t. First, I called about bringing in my handicap placard in with my driver’s license, and was told that only the judge could dismiss my ticket. So, I went in and showed the ticket, my placard, and my license and he asked, guilty or not guilty. I was shocked. I said "not guilty." I went to the court again to ask him to dismiss the ticket. Not only did he find me guilty and fine me, but also went on to warn me that this was on my record now, and that if I receive a second violation that I will be fined $460. He went on to lecture me about my placard being a privilege and referencing the “word of the law.” I am a disabled veteran and I understand why I received the ticket, what broke me was the judge’s lack of compassion and harsh punitive actions. Is the county that desperate for money? Sandra Thompson , Shady Cove Cranberry bog If you are wondering how the U.S. government can spend its way into $18 trillion of debt, let me just give you a small example. This year the Department of Agriculture will spend $55 million to buy 680,000 barrels of cranberries to distribute to food banks and schools. Why? Because the growers are growing too many cranberries! Ever suspicious of the free markets, the USDA is spending your money to bail out the cranberry growers. The cranberry growers are growing too many cranberries because they know that Uncle Sugar will bail them out. The problem is growing bigger each year, because the government distorts the market. If the free market were allowed to function, some cranberry growers would go broke or switch to other crops, but we can’t have that! Our Oregon congressmen and senators lobbied for this handout of your money so they could get donations from the cranberry growers and their associations to get reelected. This is how it works: I get you free money (your tax dollars) and you donate to my election. Your children and grandchildren will pay the freight for this fiasco, but who cares? Certainly not Congress or the USDA.
