Investigators have seized large numbers of tools and building materials in connection with the case against Andrew Caucutt, 40, and want to find a way to return them to their original owners. Caucutt, of the 6100 block of Sterling Creek Road, was cited and released Monday on five counts each of second-degree burglary and first-degree theft, and two counts each of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, second-degree theft and third-degree criminal mischief. He was not lodged at the Jackson County Jail because his health conditions would not make him a candidate for the jail, Central Point police Sgt. Charles Newell said. Details on the condition that kept Caucutt out of jail were not immediately available. Officers from four police agencies raided Caucutt’s home on Jan. 16, netting a large cache of contractors’ tools and merchandise associated with construction sites. Advertisement The items were all taken from construction sites over the past five months, Newell said. "He basically went at night to job sites all around the Rogue Valley from Ashland to Eagle Point," Newell said. "He took anything from microwaves that were going to be installed to door knobs or light fixtures." In some cases, Caucutt then used the stolen items to barter for things like cigarettes, Newell said. The items were found in a barn and garage at Caucutt’s residence during the Jan. 16 search, Newell said. Police continued their investigation over the past two weeks, culminating in Monday’s citations, Newell said. Caucutt did not return telephone calls Tuesday for comment. The case likely will be presented to a Jackson County grand jury this month, then Caucutt will be ordered to appear in Jackson County Circuit Court, Newell said. Central Point police plan to make the seized property available for viewing so victims can collect their tools. Any victims, however, must have a police report in order to claim stolen items, police said.
