Rogue River company gets library project Cubit Construction bids $937,000 in competition with seven other firms By BUFFY POLLOCK for the Mail Tribune ROGUE RIVER - Local contractor Cubit Construction has been named the low bidder for the Main Street library's expansion project. "We love that we are, as many people have stated, a Rogue River company doing a Rogue River project," said contractor Rob Lowe. The $1.6 million project - including design, construction, administration and miscellaneous costs allocates up to $1.23 million for construction. Cubit's bid of $937,000 was the lowest of eight bidders. All bids, which ranged up to $1.1 million, came in significantly below budget, much to everyone's surprise, said Deputy County Administrator Dave Kanner. "It was definitely a very nice surprise that no one was expecting." Kanner said, by law, all bidders are prescreened and the lowest bid is usually selected if everything is in order. Lowe, who signed contracts Friday with library officials, said he was getting permits to begin the project's demolition phase, which he expects will be completed in about eight months. Cubit's past projects include the newly finished Three Rivers Cancer Center in Grants Pass, several projects for the Rogue River School District as well as a vocational remodel for School District 7, several projects with Rogue Community College and Asante Health System. "It's been a good year for us. Hopefully 2002 will be just as good," he said. Lowe, based out of Rogue River for 15 years, said he was happy the project would benefit local workers. "It's nice to keep a project like this in the community as well as in the Rogue Valley because we get so many out-of-towners bidding from places like Roseburg and Portland all the time. This project is part of the $39.8 million county library bond and includes additions to the front and back of the existing structure. "It's basically going to be a completely new place when it's all said and done. And it's gonna be very nice - a lot of nice big open window areas, concrete columns, a big entryway. real open and just really nice," Lowe said. County commissioners will give final approval to the contract on Jan. 16. Construction would have to begin within seven days.
