UP NEXT: Today, 4 p.m., Medford Mustangs vs. Portland Barbers, Chemeketa Community College in Salem.   » Social News It took a bit longer than Medford coach Nate Mayben may have preferred but the Mustangs’ American Legion AAA team still managed to close up shop early Wednesday in the first round of the state tournament in Salem. The Mustangs pounded out 19 hits and strung together three big innings to topple the Albany Mid-Valley Rockets 14-3 in just eight innings at Chemeketa Community College. “We had to grind out the first part of the game but we made some good adjustments at the plate and were able to put a lot of runs on the board later in the game,” said Mayben. The Mustangs (35-11), who won by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule in a contest slated for nine innings, take on a familiar second-round foe in the Demarini Post 20 Dirtbags from Dallas at 4 p.m. today. “We’ve played them three times,” said Mayben. “They compete and they play the game hard. They have a couple of good lefties. Hopefully we can scrape some runs together.” From the fifth inning on in Wednesday’s game, the Mustangs didn’t need to scrape anything together as the hits came in bunches. The Rockets led 2-0 before Medford struck for five runs in the fifth inning, with a chain of six straight hits capped by Eric Carlson’s two-run double. In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs chalked up six runs and scattered eight hits, with Colton Westfall providing the highlight on a two-run triple. The Mustangs tacked on three more in the eighth. Medford’s Cody Coggins was solid on the mound, allowing two runs — just one earned — on five hits and four walks accompanied by seven strikeouts. “He was a little off at times,” said Mayben about Coggins early in the contest. “He left the ball up but he was able to make some adjustments and overall did a great job. I think he wanted to do better but he did everything he needed to do.” Micah Brown finished 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored for the Mustangs, while Bryce Rogan went 3-for-5 and Carlson 2-for-5 — both drove in three and scored twice. Westfall went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a couple of runs scored, with Cole Carder, Jared Evans and Tate Cowden all going 2-for-5. Carder also scored three runs.
