Doney confirmed Wednesday that his last day on the job at the Medford Police Department will be Monday, Dec. 2. He starts his job as chief in Springfield Wednesday, Dec. 18. "It was an incredible career opportunity that maybe comes up once in a lifetime, and I chose to put my name in the hat," Doney said. "This wasn't a decision that I took on lightly." Doney will start with a salary of $118,477, according to information provided by Springfield City Manager Gino Grimaldi. Doney will oversee 123 employees, 70 of whom are sworn officers, and a budget of $19.7 million. Doney praised the Springfield department, calling it a well oiled machine. "It really solidified my decision," he said. "They know how to do police work." Medford police Chief Tim George said he will select a replacement by Dec. 2, and Doney will be part of the team that selects a replacement candidate. They plan to promote internally. "He's one of the finest cops I know. He's one of the best people I know," George said of Doney. "I'm sad that we're losing him. We won't be able to replace him. You can't replace a Tim Doney." Doney worked his way up through the ranks, starting in 1987 as a patrol officer. He was promoted to deputy chief July 18, 2011, the same day as the infamous Criado murders in Medford. Doney said he's excited about the move, but it's also bittersweet to leave the place where he grew up. "I've spent a substantial portion of my childhood living a couple blocks away from (Medford) City Hall," Doney said. "I owe much to the city of Medford and the Medford Police Department."
