But the SOC preseason favorite Comets won’t duplicate that undefeated season. Roseburg ambushed Crater in Saturday’s SOC doubleheader opener with a solid defensive effort to back up a pair of strong pitching performances. The Indians pinned 1-0 and 2-1 losses on the Comets. "Our defense played phenomenal," Roseburg coach Tony Campos said. "They hit the ball pretty solid at us. We made play after play after play." Both teams were impressive in the field. The Indians (7-3, 2-0 SOC) only made one error on the day and the Comets didn’t commit any. Advertisement In the opener, Roseburg junior Jadye Curry tossed an eight-inning, one-hit shutout to outduel Janelle Cristofaro. Crater’s Cristofaro, who absorbed loses in both ends of the twin bill, went 7-0 last year and didn’t allow a run in conference play. Cristofaro recorded 11 strikeouts in the opener and 15 on the day. The Comets (8-3, 0-2 SOC) only hit came on a fifth-inning single by Haley Hevern. Roseburg scored the winning run when Brittany Gates opened the eighth with a walk, Brandi Campos doubled and Kim Posey hit a one-out sacrifice fly. The Indians scored two runs in the first inning of Game 2 and made the lead hold up behind the five-hit pitching of freshman Mikayla Endicott. Cristofaro got into trouble when she walked Campos and a fielder’s choice put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt, Campos scored on a ground out by Ashley Roy, and Jazmine Crowe followed with a RBI single. An outstanding defensive play by Roseburg right fielder Bryttny Kreshka denied the Comets a scoring opportunity in the fifth. Crater had runners on first and third with two outs when Becca Shelamer smacked a grounder through the right side of the infield, but Kreshka made the throw to first to end the inning. Crater cut the deficit in half in the sixth on a lead-off single by Cristofaro, an error and Susan Winningham’s RBI single one out later. "We don’t have the overpowering pitcher," said Campos. "But we kept the ball down and let our defense do the job."
