South Medford surprises Roseburg in sweep The setbacks to the Panthers leaves the Indians in a tie for third in the final Southern Oregon Conference standings The only item at stake for the Panthers was pride, and they used a healthy dose of it to pull off a 3-2, 13-6 sweep of Roseburg in the final Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader for both teams. The twin setbacks left Roseburg tied with Crater for third place in the league standings with 8-6 records, but the Indians get the No. 3 state playoff berth by virtue of their sweep over the Comets earlier this season. South Medford finished its season at 5-9 in conference play and 9-12-1 overall. "We won three of our last four games against a couple of playoff teams (Roseburg and Crater)," South Medford coach Steve Antich said. "It was a good way to end the season, and hopefully this is something we can build on for next year." Clint Rodreick was the biggest hero for the Panthers as he notched both victories on the mound and delivered the game-winning hit in Game 1. With the score tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, Dave Henneman and Corey O'Neill drew walks and then moved up a base on a wild pitch. That set the stage for Rodreick, who drilled an RBI single to right off Roseburg reliever Nick Debs to win the game. Rodreick scattered six hits, struck out three and walked three in a complete-game performance in Game 1. In a wild Game 2, Roseburg scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, only to watch the Panthers tie the contest in the bottom of the inning and then explode for seven runs in the sixth to win going away. A double by Jared Stebbins followed by Blake St. Onge's RBI single tied the game in the fifth. In the sixth, a two-run triple by Jeremy Frantz and RBI doubles by St. Onge and Ryan Heil fueled the Panthers' big inning. Heil went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs in the second game. Frantz went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, and St. Onge went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Saturday also marked the varsity debut of freshman Logan Boyd, who clubbed a double off the wall in his first at-bat and finished 2-for-3 in the second game.
