In order to maintain our own schedule here at Since You Asked International HQ (which includes a lengthy lunch), we won't give you the whole list. That will also save some trees, since the list provided by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration runs 14 pages. You are correct — marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug. The DEA says Schedule I includes "drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. ... the most dangerous drugs of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical dependence." Among the other drugs on the Schedule I list, according to the DEA, are heroin, LSD, ecstasy and peyote. Here are the other schedules, brief descriptions of them by the DEA, and a few of the drugs listed under those schedules: Schedule II: DEA description says drugs in this category have "a high potential for abuse, less abuse potential than Schedule I drugs, with use potentially leading to severe psychological or physical dependence." Schedule II drugs include hydrocodone (Vicodin), cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, Dexedrine, Adderall and Ritalin. Schedule III: Described as "drugs with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence." Schedule III drugs include codeine, ketamine, anabolic steroids and testosterone. Schedule IV: Described as "drugs with a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence." Schedule IV drugs include Xanax, Soma, Darvon, Darvocet, Valium, Ativan and Ambien. Schedule V: Described as "drugs with lower potential for abuse than Schedule IV and ... containing limited quantities of certain narcotics. Schedule V drugs are generally used for antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgesic purposes." Schedule V drugs include low-dose codeine, Lomotil, Motofen and Lyrica.
