Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 11, 2005 Wilson cruises to title, makes PAL squad OXFORD, Calif. — Mike Wilson used his ring experience to gain the upper hand and defeated Lenroy Thomas 16-5 Sunday to win the superheavyweight division in the National Police Athletic League Boxing Championships. Thomas, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound southpaw from Miami, had two strong rounds before the agility and elusiveness of Wilson left him tired and sluggish for the last two rounds. "I had nothing to go off of before the fight because I didn’t watch tape on him," said Wilson, of Central Point and the Bulldog Boxing Club. "I didn't even know he was left-handed until we tapped gloves." Wilson successfully used a similar strategy against bigger fighters earlier in the tournament, making them chase him. It worked again against Thomas. "When I get in there and move, it kills those big guys," said Wilson. "I don’t want to stand there and go toe-to-toe. Five years from now, we’ll be watching a lot of these guys from this tourney on pay-per-view." Advertisement With the win, Wilson earns a spot on the PAL national team and entry into the USA Boxing national championships. "It was my fourth fight in a week, and it feels like I got ran over by a truck," said Wilson. "But it’s another title to add to my resume." Next for Wilson will be a three-week training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., to prepare for the world championships in Beijing, China. "I’ll take some time off and concentrate on working in the weight room," said Wilson. "I will always have my boxing skills, but I want to put on more muscle because it always helps to have more power."
