Eagle Point wrestlers come up short at Coast Classic The Eagles already own dual-meet victories over the likes of Newberg, West Linn, Crook County and Crater, but Saturday marked the first time this season Eagle Point has been on the short end of an event. Eagle Point finished fourth in the team standings with 169 points, 521/2 behind tournament-winner Redmond. Roseburg finished second at 191, and Newberg was third at 171. Crook County finished fifth at 1541/2. In other local results, Phoenix placed ninth with 971/2 points, Grants Pass 18th (58), North Medford 22nd (35) and Klamath Union 23rd (32). Leading the charge for Eagle Point were Andrew Larson, Joe Lewis and Morgan Edenstrom. Larson placed first at 125 pounds, while Lewis was second at 119 and Edenstrom second at 145. Also boosting the Eagles' cause was a fourth-place finish by Jake Phillips (189), fifth-place efforts from J.P. Sheile (112) and Nick Smith (275) and a sixth-place outing from Jason Adams (152). SOUTH MEDFORD TAKES FOURTH - At Camas, Wash., Ben Vandagrift claimed the 215-pound title to help South Medford to a fourth-place finish at the eight-team Camas Invitational. Rainier finished first with 158 points. Vandagrift punished Camas' Brandon Coudure, who came in undefeated, to the tune of 18-8 in the finals. Ian Rasmussen (125) and Matt McCoy (152) both took second for the Panthers. Jerry DeBoer (112), Dan Swift (145) and Kevin O'Shea (171) each took third, while Evan Norris (119) and Joe Ramirez (275) finished fourth. TEAM RESULTS - 1, Rainier 158; 2, Camas 130; 3, Evergreen 127.5; 4, South Medford 121; 5, South Salem 117.5; 6, Rex Putnam 113; 7, Sandy 46; 8, Fort Vancouver 19. Swimming NORTH BEND - Five Phoenix swimmers advanced to the finals in helping the Pirates to a solid outing at the North Bend Invitational. Paced by Tony Bird, Justin Heath and K.C. Cloyd, the boys team finished the highest among Class 3A teams and sixth overall in the 13-team meet. Heath placed third in the 200-meter freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle, while Bird was seventh in the 50 and ninth in the 100. Cloyd finished 11th in the 100 butterfly. Bird, Heath and Cloyd were joined by Jake Nelson in taking fifth in the 200 medley relay, with Bird, Heath, Nelson and Jesse Holcomb finishing fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. In girls action, Phoenix placed 10th overall behind the exploits of Kimbra Chizek and Maggie Morefield. Chizek placed eighth in the 50 freestyle, with Morefield 12th in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 200 individual medley.
