Businessman charged with racketeering ASHLAND � A six-month investigation ended in the arrest of local businessman Friday. According to Ashland police reports, Leonard William Gotshalk, 42, of 1200 Butler Creek Road, was arrested by Medford police Friday after turning himself in at the Jackson County Jail. Gotshalk was wanted on a Jackson County warrant issued Monday charging him with racketeering and three counts of aggravated theft. Prior to his arrest, Ashland police were investigating allegations made by a local real estate mortgage broker that Gotshalk had furnished false financial information to secure loans. The loans � totaling over $300,000 from three private lenders � were allegedly made in 1996 and 1998. An investigation revealed Gotshalk defaulted on the loans, police report. Two victims are from Ashland, the third from southern California, according to police. Gotshalk was indicted Jan. 30 by a Jackson County grand jury. No arraignment date has been set yet. He was jailed on $100,000 bail but posted 10 percent and was released Friday. In 1998, Gotshalk was a bidder in the sale of the Mark Antony Hotel, now the Ashland Springs Hotel. At the time, Gotshalk was a Klamath Falls cattle rancher who owned a home in Ashland. Ashland police report that the investigation is ongoing.
