Nelson stays hot as SOU wins tennis match ASHLAND Junior Julie Nelson remained unbeaten on the season, helping the Southern Oregon University womens tennis team to a 5-4 win over George Fox University on Sunday. Nelson teamed with her younger sister Shannon for an 8-2 win at No. 3 as the Raiders swept all three doubles matches. She then cruised to dual-clinching 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Anne Robinson in the No. 4 singles match. The two wins gives Nelson the schools best season start ever (15-0) and moved within one of equaling SOU records for longest singles (nine) and doubles (eight) win streaks established last year by Judy Jonasson. "Julie is really coming into her own," said SOU coach Gail Patton. "We are really relying on her and Katie (Fankhanel) for wins." The outcome was a little tighter but, because of the success of the doubles squads, the Raiders improved to 8-0 on the season. "We still have tougher matches to come but our doubles really made the difference," said Patton. "Some of our players have played better singles but the competition was tough. "It was good to get the pressure going to see how they responded." Fankhanel improved to 13-1 on the season with a grueling, three-set victory over Lisa Trefts. "Katies experience and competitive spirit took over in the third set," said Patton of her No. 1 singles competitor. "She played a really smart match and took care of business." SOU hits the road for matches next weekend with Cascade Conference duals at Albertson and Northwest Nazarene. SINGLES Katie Frankhanel, SOU, def.
