Bud Cup begins today in White City The ultimate in outlaw stock car racing comes to the Southern Oregon Speedway this weekend. The inaugural Bud Cup kicks off today at 6 p.m. with time trials and continues through Sunday at the third-mile clay track in White City. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing scheduled for 6 today and Saturday. On Sunday, gates open at 11 a.m. with racing at noon. The event is an open-competition affair that will feature outlaw stock cars with 800 horsepower, wide tires and Plexiglass side boards for additional traction. Competition is open to any legal race car, except sprint cars. Entries will include late model cars from other tracks and local modified cars with added horsepower, bigger tires and sideboards. Pro stocks will also compete on Saturday while the mini stocks will race on Sunday. Finals of the open comp race will be held Sunday. One of the more intruiging entrants is from the Highwallers Racing Team, a car put together by inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem. Driven by Hershel McGriff, Jr., the car competes on various tracks in the Pacific Northwest. According to prision officials, the men involved with the racing team have been the least troublesome of the prisoners and have the lowest recidivism rate. The prisioners are taught to engineer, construct and maintain two late model cars. The skills they learn and the teamwork aspect of their experience assists them in their re-entry into society, prision officials say. All parts, materials and equipment are sponsored by the racing team�s 235 sponsors from across the country, ranging from local auto parts stores to major corporations. The Highwallers have been featured on CNN and George Michael�s Sports Machine.
