Eagle Point pushed the Black Tornado to the brink in Southern Oregon Conference volleyball at the North Medford gym. The Eagles came back in the fourth game to even the match at two games each. Then Lawson provided four big kills that helped North to a 15-10 win in the decisive fifth game. Eagle Point (7-4, 3-3 SOC) won the opener of the marathon match 25-22. North Medford answered with wins by 25-16 and 25-21 before the Eagles forced a fifth game with a 25-22 victory. Advertisement "Lawson really set a tempo and allowed us to jump ahead," said North Medford coach Ron Beick about the fifth game. "She had her best match of the season." Beick said the match was punctuated by momentum swings. In Game 1, Jessica Walters served seven straight service points to give the Black Tornado a 19-13 lead. But Shannon Richardson answered with eight from the line to help the Eagles win the game. Eagle Point held a 20-18 lead in Game 3, when Heidi Sandgren served five straight as North (10-2, 5-1 SOC) won. And in the fourth game, Annie Mannenbach served six consecutive points to end the game after North had gone up 20-18. In the fifth game, Laura Tarkon served points 10-12, Walters had a key hit off a block for the 14th point and Sandgren served out for the match. "Something we’ve worked on is to have the stamina to play strong," said Beick. "Our serving and defensive play in the fifth game is what made a difference." Walters set a school record with nine aces in the match, while the team recorded a record 55 kills. Walters and Tarkon led with 10 kills each. "Ashley Curtis and Nicole Lucas both stepped up at critical times to get key kills and help them win games when they were down," said Beick. "Also, Amanda Grieve passed extremely well for them in tight spots." Junior outside Lucas paced the Eagles with 17 kills, while Curtis had 13 kills and 15 blocks. ROSEBURG 25-25-25, SOUTH MEDFORD 10-12-17 — At Roseburg, Emily Waldron led a balanced attack with 12 kills and five blocks as Roseburg cruised to an SOC victory. Katie Fuller added six kills and five blocks and Nora Burmeister drove home four kills and led the Indians (5-1 SOC) with six blocks. Corynn Jorgensen racked up 11 digs and Lindsy Bartholomew set the pace with 26 assists. South Medford fell to 2-4 in the SOC. GRANTS PASS 25-25-25, KLAMATH UNION 14-13-12 — At Grants Pass, a three-game sweep of Klamath Union boosted Grants Pass to 3-3 in a tight SOC race. Katie Tardieu’s 12 kills and eight digs paced the Cavers, and Ashley Franko and Danielle Cereda contributed 10 and eight digs, respectively. The Pelicans slipped to 1-5 in the SOC. ASHLAND 25-25-25, CRATER 14-16-15 — At Central Point, Chelsea Van Lehn was 19 of 26 without a hitting error as sixth-ranked Ashland picked up an SOC win. Van Lehn also contributed three service aces and nine digs. The Grizzlies improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in conference action. Junior outside hitter Justine Bettencourt had three kills and 17 digs and freshman defensive specialist Haley Hevern scooped 10 digs for Crater, which fell to 0-6 in the SOC and 1-8 overall.
