The National Weather Service has issued red-flag warnings for southwest Oregon and Northern California.  The affected area covers a swath from Jackson County south well into Northern California, north toward Cottage Grove, west to the south-central coast and east to beyond Lakeview. Forecasters predict scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds. Some storms could produce small hail and damaging wind gusts, the weather service reported. The storms, combined with dry conditions in forests, could stir fires burning now and start new wildfires. A red flag warning will be in effect from 2 to 11 p.m. Monday in the eastern Rogue Valley, Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges, the Klamath Basin and parts of the Klamath, Umpqua and Fremont-Winema national forests. One will be in effect from 2 p.m. Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday in the Umpqua Valley and the Rogue basin, including the Illinois Valley. Another warning will be in effect from 11 p.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday for the south-central Oregon Coast and western Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. High clouds are moving across eastern Klamath and Lake counties now, the weather service reported. Westside valleys are expected to see storms in the afternoon and evening. Storm clouds are then forecast to move west. "Lightning and high fire danger will likely result in new starts," a message from the Weather Service said. "Gusty thunderstorm winds could contribute to new fire spread. Despite rainfall, initial attack resources could be overwhelmed, and holdover fires are possible." Meteorologist Mike Petrucelli said the best chance for lightning strikes will be over higher elevations, and the storms are likely to be isolated. "The storms that do develop will tend to move quick," Petrucelli said.  Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] . Follow him at www.twitter.com/ryanpfeil .
