The Panthers improved to 2-0 Saturday with a 53-41 non-conference boys basketball win over the Eugene school despite a cold shooting hand early and 1- for-12 casting from 3-point range. "We just didn’t shoot the ball well," said South coach Dennis Murphy, whose team played an early afternoon game after opening the season the night before with a 63-52 win over South Eugene. "It’s a little bit difficult to come into that situation," he said of two games in less than 24 hours. "You don’t do it very often, and there’s nobody in the gym. It’s a little bit tough, but both teams have to do it." The Panthers led 10-4 after the first quarter despite going 4-for-15 from the field. They grabbed 14 offensive rebounds in the first half but missed a number of putbacks. South increased its lead to 10 by halftime, and the two teams played virtually even in the second half. The Panthers’ defense helped keep the game under control, forcing 21 turnovers. South’s Boomer Marshall scored 14 points, and Eric Fischer tallied eight points and nine rebounds. Fouled out — Cottrell. JV result — South Medford won. ASHLAND 65, NORTH BEND 51 — At Ashland, Clint Bryan, Bryan Clevenger and Chris Presicci scored in double figures to power Ashland to a 2-0 start. After playing at South Albany on Friday night, the Grizzlies returned home to handle North Bend behind Bryan’s 14 points and five rebounds, Clevenger’s 13 points and Presicci’s 10 points and three assists. KU junior guard Jake Wynn led all scorers with 25 points, and senior Zach Tucker went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in overtime and finished with 17 points. Skyline Conference PHOENIX FIFTH — At Gold Beach, Reedsport went on a 16-5 run in the game’s final 3½ minutes to edge past Phoenix, 52-46, in the third-place game of the Pacific Rim Tournament. Brady Rhodes scored 14 points to lead the Pirates, who wound up fifth. Junior point guard Brett Ellis made the all-tourney team for the Pirates, now 1-2 on the season. Earlier in the day, Coquille beat Phoenix, 70-67, in overtime. Phoenix rallied from six points down in the fourth quarter. Three Pirates combined for 52 points — Brady Rhodes with 19, Brent Ellis 18 and Mike Smith 15.
