LOCAL ROUNDUP Elks stave off Rogues; Mavs clinch title spot Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Aug. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Bend scored a run in five straight innings after being held scoreless for the first three frames and fended off a comeback by the Medford Rogues to secure a 6-5 victory under smoke-filled conditions Friday night at Harry & David Field. The WCL South Division teams will square off again at 6:35 tonight in Game 2 of the three-game series. Bend (32-13) and Medford (21-25) were even at 2-all through five innings, but the Elks tallied once in the sixth, twice in the seventh and once more in the eighth to build a 6-2 cushion. The Rogues rallied with three runs in the eighth inning after two outs were made. Nathan Etheridge singled home Billy Fredrick, who was previously hit by a pitch and had his franchise-record hitting streak halted at 15 games. Tim Lichty and J.J. Kitaoka then supplied consecutive RBI doubles to pull Medford within one run at 6-5, but Bend closer Daniel Bies was able to get John Kinne to ground out to first base to keep the Rogues from tying the game. Medford was able to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth after a leadoff single by Derron Davis and walks to Dan Mayer and Fredrick. With the bases loaded, however, Stefan Panayiotou grounded into a game-ending double play up the middle. Davis, Etheridge, Lichty and Kitaoka each had two hits for the Rogues, while West Tunnell was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple for the Elks. Bend also got solo home runs from Tyler Davis and Cooper Hummel.
