Now they have another shared experience after being named First Citizens by the Chamber of Medford/Jackson County during the Excellence in Business Awards at Rogue Valley Country Club. "I've always felt things like this were about community, family and their interrelationship," Mike Naumes said. "It wasn't just about the two of us. We were taught — and learned at an early age —  giving is certainly more blessed than receiving. We work closely together as a team, and I am lucky to have a superstar partner. Laura and I feel very blessed to be born and raised in this great community." The Naumes and Earnest families have been associated with the Rogue Valley's pear industry for generations. Not surprisingly, they grew up attending the same Medford Pear Shippers and Fruit Growers League meetings with their families. But it wasn't until Ed Earnest sent his daughter over to pick up some chemicals from the Naumes place that the two took more than passing notice. "It was the first time we talked," Laura Naumes recalled. "But Dad was a taskmaster, and I couldn't take too long. He expected a quick turnaround on those chores." In the intervening years, they've headed up one of the world's largest pear-growing operations, raised triplets and spurred a variety of philanthropic efforts. They are the second couple to share First Citizen status. Sherm and Wanda Olsrud were selected back in 2000. "To even be mentioned in the same breath with the Olsruds is very special," Mike Naumes said. Laura Naumes is the first woman to chair Pear Bureau Northwest, whose board she joined in 2003. Along with a variety of regional agricultural board positions, she is a former member of the Federal Reserve Bank and joined the Oregon State University Board of Trustees in 2012. Locally, among her many associations, she has served on the YMCA and Boy Scouts of America boards. In addition to heading up the family business — co-founded by his father Joe and Steve Nye in 1946, and known as Nye and Naumes in its formative years — Mike Naumes is chairman of the St. Mary’s Community Foundation and formerly chaired the St. Mary's school board. In 2009, the Naumeses formed Donate Fruit Cause, providing millions of pounds of fresh fruit to needy people.
