Martin, Hansen take lead at golf tourney LaPine�s Adam Martin shot a 1-under-par 70 Monday to tie Eugene�s Jeff Hansen for the lead in the boys� 16-17-year-old division at the Southern Oregon Junior Golf Tournament at Rogue Valley Country Club. Martin shot a 35 on the front and back nine while Hansen carded a 37 and 33, respectively. Grants Pass� Erik Hill shot his way into a tie with Eugene�s Chris Dukeminier, both standing at 2-over-par 73. Rogue Valley Country Club�s Noah Horstman is tied for sixth with two other competitors at 74. Normal course par for the RVCC�s outside course is 72 over 18 holes. But during the tournament, due to construction, the 12th green is temporarily moved closer, shortening course par by one stroke to 71. Portland�s Kerri Breslin leads the girls 15-17-year-old division with an 8-over-par 79 while Bend�s Amy Mombert is second with an 85. Kacey Clark from RVCC is third at 87 while Stewart Meadows� Ellen Dow shot a 93 for a fifth-place standing. FOWLER IN SECOND AT STATE TOURNEY � At Corvallis, South Medford High�s Abby Fowler shot a 7-over-par 79 in the first round of the Big I Independent Insurance Classic state qualifying tournament at Trysting Tree. Fowler, a senior-to-be, stands in second place and tees off today at 9:30 a.m. in the final round. The winner advances to the national tournament in Georgia. "I played pretty good today," said Fowler, who finished sixth in last year�s state tournament. "I had a little bit of bad luck here and there and I three-putted a hole but overall I did fine." Fowler qualified for the state tournament by earning medalist honors with a 79 on June 16 at the Rogue Valley Country Club. Ryan Ulbricht, an incoming sophomore at South Medford, shot an 83 on the men�s side. Baseball ASHLAND 10-21, SOUTH MEDFORD 9-1 � At Ashland, the Ashland American Legion baseball team snuck by with an eight-inning win and then routed the South Medford Colts in the four-inning nightcap for their sixth straight win. Ashland�s Titus Weston belted a bases-loaded double with no outs in the bottom of the eighth to push home the winning runs in the opener. The Colts were led by Kyle Hadley and David Henneman�s three hits apiece. In Game 2, Bill Rowe had three hits, all doubles, to go along with four runs and four RBIs for Ashland. Teammate Blane Newfield also had two doubles and four RBIs as Ashland improved to 12-9 overall and 12-8 in conference play. South Medford fell to 15-15 and will wrap up the season with a doubleheader against North Medford today at 6 p.m. at Miles Field. Boys Basketball OREGON ICE DROPS TWO � At Colorado Springs, Colo., the Oregon Ice 15-under boys basketball team dropped two games Monday at the 44-team BCI National Tournament. The Ice, a select team made up of players throughout the state, fell to the Texas Tornado, 54-46, then lost to the Colorado Rockets, 49-44 in pool play. Ryan Lucas and Beau Hovland, both freshman-to-be at North Medford High, scored 10 and three points, respectively, in Game 1 while Chris Strahm, a sophomore-to-be at North, added four. Lavell Hesia, an incoming freshman at Mazama, scored four points. In Game 2, Strahm scored six points and Lucas, Hovland and Hesia each added four. Oregon plays a select team from Indiana today in the final pool game before heading into bracket play on Thursday.
