Cascade Christian's Brookins tabbed SCL MVP Whitney Brookins has been an all-state first-teamer in volleyball and softball for Cascade Christian throughout her career. Now the 5-foot-10 senior wing can add Southern Cascade League most valuable player for basketball to that list. Brookins, along with junior teammate Hannah Gettman were among those named to the first-team, all SCL recently. St. Mary's post Brittany Farrer was the only freshman named to the first team. Seniors Kristen Salamone and Laural Kelly were named to the second team for the SCL champion and state-playoff bound Challengers, while senior Annie Maurer and junior Christina Vaninetti represented St. Mary's on the third team. In boys, junior Michael Fiddler and senior Thatcher Jones represented the Crusaders on the first team, while junior Mychal Sha was the lone Cascade Christian member. Gilchrist senior Adam Ernst was named player of the year, while St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug earned coach of the year honors. Cascade Christian juniors Sam Kinney and Jon Gettman made the second team as did St. Mary's seniors Pete Staver and Jared Sharp. Brookins averaged a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds a game for the Challengers. She pulled down 20 rebounds in a seeding game against Bonanza on Saturday. "She's really come into her own this year," said Cascade Christian coach Loren King, who picked up coach of the year honors after a 21-3 mark in the regular season. "Especially the second half of the season, she just stepped it up to another level." Gettman, a 5-6 point guard, nearly brought a triple-double to the plate every night for the Challengers with 12 points, eight assists and nearly 10 rebounds a game. "She's the kind of person coaches are talking about when you talk about points guards," said King. "She's always checking to see what we have to run then puts it into operation." Fiddler, a 6-7 post, averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game for the state-tournament bound and seventh-ranked Crusaders. "He blocks shots, plays very good defense and gets out and runs," said Pflug, whose team finished the regular season at 19-6. "With the speed of the team, we had the luxury of having him inside so we could play tight perimeter defense. "If someone did get around us, the kids new Michael was in there." Jones, a 5-10 point guard, notched 15 points, five assists and only 11/2 turnovers per game. "That's amazing," said Pflug of Jones' minuscule turnover average. "Considering how much we run and how much he handles the ball."
