Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 17, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 17, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 17, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 17, 1916 MEDFORD EASILY DEFEATS FRANKLIN Outclassing the vaunted Franklin high school team in every department of play, the Medford basket tossers drubbed Portland to the tune of 13-3. Medford's goal was never in much danger and so closely were the metropolitans guarded that they only had three chances at goal, scoring once on a long throw. Portland's oft-repeated excuse that they could not meet the teams of southern Oregon because the game would not be close proved a boomerang, with all the ear marks of truth. In fact, the game displayed a marked superiority over the northerners by the locals. The Portland team claim they were tired from the long ride and this must have had its effect, for they certainly put up no game compared with their reputation. Mutt Williamson was a wizard on the floor, breaking up passes and then shooting five field goals. He had six chances to score, missing once. Thomas made a field goal on a foul. Torney, Young and Brandon did noble work in breaking up Portland's formations, never letting them get started. Brown, who was touted a phenom, did not score a field goal and converted one foul out of twelve chances. The Franklin team plays in Ashland tonight with that team and returns here to play on Friday evening. Coach Dewey of the visiting team refereed the game and was excellent. No rough playing was allowed and the crowd made to observe sportsmanlike attitude. This has been a serious offense in the past, and the action taken was the right one. LOCAL AND PERSONAL C. A. Wheeler, formerly of this valley, but now a business man of Lewiston, Idaho, is visiting relatives and friends in this vicinity this week. Through the agency of general irrigation, Mr. Wheeler says the Lewiston country is rapidly becoming a very prosperous region. He prophets the general use of irrigation in this valley within a very short time and then he says "it will be one of the banner regions of the Pacific coast."
