Authorities plan another effort Thursday. Medford police set up the operation at the intersection of Jackson Street and Keene Way Drive between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday. While a police department employee crossed the street repeatedly, officers cited drivers who failed to stop. In addition to the citations for failure to yield, police issued one speeding ticket and 11 citations for violations ranging from loud stereos to problem mud flaps. The department has conducted pedestrian-safety operations at busy intersections since last year to educate drivers about pedestrian right of way, said officer Gail Schweizer, the program’s organizer. Advertisement In April, officers cited just nine drivers during a pedestrian-safety operation at Jackson Street and Keene Way Drive. Schweizer said he was disappointed to see the number increase, but thinks the program is working. "Pedestrians really like it," he said. While police work at the pedestrian-safety operations, walkers regularly thank officers and suggest intersections that need attention, Schweizer said. The department plans to have its next pedestrian-safety operation Thursday at Jackson and Genessee streets between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Printer Friendly Version Email Story to a Friend Subscribe Archive: Click to Search Mail Tribune Home Local News | Sports | Business | Obituaries | Life Opinion - Politics | AP News | Archives | Site Map E Southern Oregon | Classified Copyright © 1997-2003 Mail Tribune.
