Alan Bates, who died suddenly Aug. 5 while on a fishing trip with his son, will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at Southern Oregon University. The service will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Rogue River Room in the Stevenson Union, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. A memorial service at the Oregon State Capitol is planned at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Senate Chambers, with a reception to follow, according to a release from Senate President Peter Courtney. A large photograph and a map of the Senator’s district are displayed outside the Senate Chamber at the Capitol. Inside, the chamber is lighted by a single candle on Bates' floor desk, where sits a portrait of Bates and a bouquet of flowers. A third tribute, flowers and black drape across a desk, have been set up in Bates' office on the second floor of the Senate Wing, according to Courtney's release. Residents can share condolences and memories about Bates on note cards outside the chamber.
