James Edward Lewis, 33, a former Grants Pass resident, is the subject of a federal investigation after police in Westerly, R.I., found him Thursday with books about making bombs along with wires, timers and batteries, the Westerly Sun newspaper reported. Lewis is wanted by Ashland police on a probation violation stemming from a 2001 conviction for first-degree aggravated animal abuse, court records show. He was convicted in Jackson County Circuit Court and sentenced to 10 days in jail and two years probation after pleading guilty to charges that he bashed a kitten to death in front of four stunned witnesses in September 2001. The Westerly Sun reported that Lewis is also wanted in Massachusetts for allegedly firing a handgun during a January altercation. Agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating Lewis’ involvement with the suspected bomb-making materials, the newspaper reported.
