North Medford junior catcher Rob Folsom, a second-team selection last season, and senior outfielder Reese Lamson were named to the first-team squad. Newberg senior pitcher Dallas Buck was named player of the year for the state-champion Tigers, while Jesuit’s Craig Webster was voted coach of the year. Hitting in the leadoff spot, Folsom, the SOC player of the year, boasted a team-high .506 batting average to go along with seven home runs, 26 RBIs, 37 runs and eight stolen bases. Advertisement A three-year starter for the Black Tornado, Folsom will take a 39-game hitting streak dating back to 2002 into his senior campaign. Lamson hit third for North and batted .403 with a team-high 19 stolen bases in as many attempts. "I knew Rob would be there," said North Medford coach Brett Wolfe, whose team finished 25-4 and was ranked No. 1 for most of the season. "I thought as far as athletically and what he did on the field, it would be hard to keep him from that spot. "Reese was a surprise, not because of his abilities or his numbers, but down here in Southern Oregon you just don’t know if the people up north get a chance to see a player like him." The SOC champion Black Tornado also put senior pitcher Dustin Butler on the second team, while Roseburg had seniors Nick Waechter (infield) and Marcus Simone (outfield) representing the Indians on the second team. Grants Pass senior catcher Dan Mecum also earned second-team honors. Butler won nine games for the Tornado, which lost 9-2 in the state quarterfinals to Oregon City, and limited the opposition to just eight runs in 51 innings for a 1.10 ERA. Third-teamer Brett Timmerman posted an unblemished pitching record for North at 8-0 to go along with 37 strikeouts and a 2.37 ERA in 411/3 innings of work. "I’m excited for the kids," said Wolfe. "It’s good for our program and good for all the teams in the area to get recognition like that." South Medford center fielder Corey O’Neill was another third-team selection. The junior Panther hit .418 with 15 RBIs. Ashland junior first baseman Chad Hegdahl was an honorable mention selection, as well as North Medford senior second baseman Tyler Engle and Klamath Union senior pitcher Jon James. In the Class 3A ranks, Mazama had only one representative on the first team — senior outfielder Kyle Blank — despite winning the state title. Overall, the Vikings, a 4-3 winner over Ontario in the championship game, had three players named to the all-state teams. Central’s Jordan Pratt, who is scheduled to attend Washington State University next year on a baseball scholarship, was named player of the year and Pleasant Hill’s Steve Smith earned coach-of-the-year honors. Phoenix senior Brady Rhodes, an honorable mention all-state selection a year ago, earned second-team honors at the utility slot. Regis pitcher Mike Nelson was voted player of the year at the Class 2A/1A level, while Don Heuberger took home coach-of-the-year honors for the state-champion Rams.
