Downing gutted out a 198-196 victory over two-time champion Brian Tinsley, also of Klamath Falls, in the final match to claim the $500 first prize. The original tournament field of 84 was cut to 16 by five qualifying games. The average qualifying score was 193, and Steve Mead of Medford paced the field at 219. With the format then switching to match play to determine the final five bowlers, Tinsley came out as the new top qualifier by winning every duel on the strength of a 240 average. Fifth seed Mike Shequin of Eugene met fourth-seeded Chuck Eilenberger of Medford in the first phase of the champion-determining, stepladder conclusion. Eilenberger posted a 216-202 win to move on to face Downing, the third seed. Downing’s 234-196 victory advanced him to a matchup with last year’s champion, Harral Bobbert of Klamath Falls. Downing posted a 244-241 upset, then iced his first title by knocking off Tinsley. Lava Lanes marked the first stop for this year’s All-Stars tour, and next up is an Oct. 19-20 competition at Hanscam’s Bowl in Klamath Falls.
