Containment work progresses on 790 fire Community meeting set for tonight Comment By Anita Burke Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Anita Burke Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 8, 2014 @ 12:43 pm By Anita Burke Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 8, 2014 @ 12:43 pm » Social News More firefighters are headed into Sky Lakes Wilderness to help corral the 790 fire, which has burned roughly 2,960 acres. An update this morning on InciWeb , a fire information site, reported that additional crews would be flown into the wilderness today to work on fire line previously constructed from the east. Lines on the eastern side of the fire have held for several days now and crews will patrol the perimeter to quash areas smoldering near the line. On Saturday, the fire escaped a line on the west side, heading out of the wilderness and into Jackson County, officials said. On Sunday crews dug dozer lines outside the wilderness to serve as alternate fire lines. Multiple spot fires were contained ahead of the main fire front so crews could attack the primary edge of the blaze. That work will continue today, the fire information site reported. Helicopters, planes that scoop water from Lost Creek Lake and air tankers also will continue making water and retardant drops to keep the fire in check. A public meeting is set for 7 tonight at the Prospect Community Center, 305 Red Blanket Road, Prospect. Fire officials and local agency personnel will be on hand to provide an update on the fire. The fire is burning 10 miles southeast of Prospect and 10 miles northwest of Rocky Point, mostly in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. The Pacific Crest Trail is closed between Highway 140 and Crater Lake National Park and other trails in the wilderness are also closed. Officials posted full legal descriptions of closed areas this morning.  Officials hope to have the fire, which was started by lightning on the afternoon of July 31, contained by the end of the month.    By Anita Burke Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Anita Burke Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 8, 2014 @ 12:43 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
