Richards carries SOU to soccer win ASHLAND - Senior forward Alison Richards scored two first-half goals as the Southern Oregon women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 home victory over Cascade on Saturday. The Raiders improved to 2-2 in the Cascade Conference and 2-5 overall. Richards' first tally was in the first minute on a 30-yard blast from the right side. Jeannelle Thompson assisted. Senior fullback Monica Doshier knocked home the Raiders' second goal, a 10-yard rebound shot at the 10-minute mark. The second of Richards' goals came at 18:30, when she chipped Cascade goalkeeper Heather Roach after gathering a pass from Laura Ball. In the 80th minute, Krista Ayers capped the scoring with a 20-yard strike from the left side. Deborah Bigelow had the assist. Junior goalkeeper Emily Schifferling needed just four saves to preserve the shutout. SOU outshot the visitors, 31-8, and had 10 corner kicks to Cascade's 0. Volleyball SOU TRIUMPHS - At Ashland, Southern Oregon halted a three-match losing streak by posting big offensive numbers in a 30-21, 30-16, 24-30, 31-29 Cascade Conference victory over Western Baptist College at McNeal Pavilion. The Raiders (7-4, 2-3 Cascade) charged to a 2-0 game advantage by converting 36 of their first 58 attack attempts, an astronomical .552 efficiency, and staved off the Warriors (7-4, 3-1 Cascade) with four double-digit kill performances. Sophomore hitter Kristina Matchett led all players with 23 kills and paced SOU with a career-high 20 digs, while senior all-star Shelley Gorin added 16 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore hitters Lindsey Aitchison (17) and Sara Tatom (12) posted career-high kill totals. Southern finished with a season-high .363 offensive clip (79-for-171 with 17 errors).
