The Loggers faded down the stretch during Friday’s 62-44 loss to Days Creek, but didn’t suffer the same fate Saturday with a 57-28 victory over Umpqua Valley Christian at South Umpqua High. With the win, Butte Falls (17-7) heads to next Saturday’s Class 1A state regional girls basketball game as the No. 2 seed out of the Skyline A League. The Loggers host the No. 2 team from the Mountain West Conference, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Baker City. Sophomore Mickie Burns scored a game-high 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while Cassy Bartel grabbed 12 rebounds. Butte Falls used a 14-3 run in the second quarter to grab a comfortable 28-10 lead at the half. Advertisement "We just got up and played ball tonight," said Loggers’ coach B.J. Rodgers. "Our defense was probably the best its been all year." Butte Falls enjoyed a double-digit lead throughout the second half and held Umpqua Valley Christian to just four two-point field goals for the game. Brianna Smeltz, who had eight points and four assists, and Sarah Matthews (13 points) both made the all-tournament team. Asia Million added 11 points. The Challengers (13-11, 7-7 SCL) were outscored 16-6 in the first period. Katie O’Brien scored 14 points for Cascade. Backup point guard Melissa Gmur had a strong floor game, and Cara Teterud and Chelsea Winner provided solid rebounding.
