North Valley turns defensive in win over Lakeview MERLIN - The North Valley High girls basketball team holds no secrets when it comes to playing defense. It's in-your-face, man-to-man for 32 minutes, and may the best team win. The Knights had to lean heavily on their trusty "D" Friday night when their shooting went stone cold. The 31-14 Skyline Conference victory over Lakeview may not have been pretty, but North Valley coach Byron Robertson wasn't about to apologize. "We preach it and we believe in it," Robertson said of the man-to-man defense. "And until someone shows that they can beat it, we're going to keep playing it." Senior guards Malloree Enoch, Galina Vial and Nichole Roberts are the primary culprits in the defensive pressure. All three are sprinters on the North Valley track team and each made it to the Class 3A state meet last spring. "We feel with those three on the floor the other guards in the league don't match up," Robertson said. "They definitely cause some havoc." Lakeview played some good defense of its own, throwing a box-and-one zone at North Valley center Elaina Renius, a 6-foot-3 sophomore who managed only three points. Whitney Makepeace led North Valley with nine points and Whitney Coston added six. The victory was North Valley's third in as many Skyline games and boosted its overall record to 9-2. HIDDEN VALLEY 49, PHOENIX 42 - At Murphy, sophomore post Shea Ford had 15 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals as Hidden Valley held off Phoenix in the Skyline Conference contest. The Pirates trailed by as many as 14 points but scored the first seven points of the fourth period to pull within 39-37. But the host Mustangs (11-2, 3-0 Skyline) made 8 of 11 free throws down the stretch to notch the victory. Senior wing Jennifer Bain added 11 points for Hidden Valley, while Jamie Cavener paced the Pirates with 14. Henley jumped on Rogue River early by grabbing a 10-2 first-quarter lead and extended the margin to 34-14 at halftime. Rogue River senior post Erin Gilkison tallied a team-high 10 points. MAZAMA 42, ILLINOIS VALLEY 36 - At Klamath Falls, Lindsey English and Megan Britton combined to score all 16 fourth-quarter points for Mazama during a Skyline Conference win. Illinois Valley led 12-2 after one quarter and 27-13 early in the second half, but scored only four points in the final period. English finished with 14 points and Britton added 13 for Mazama, which improved to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in Skyline play. Kim Hamilton led Illinois Valley with 13 points.
