Siskiyou County deputy resigns after sex charges A Siskiyou County Sheriffs deputy submitted his resignation Tuesday amid allegations that he had sex with a teenage girl. The district attorneys office charged William R. Schmidt, 35, of Happy Camp, Calif., with two counts each of unlawful sexual intercourse and sexual penetration with a foreign object and three counts of oral copulation with a minor. Schmidt is accused of having a sexual relationship with a girl between 14 and 18 years old, said Bill Davis, assistant district attorney. He declined to provide more details about the alleged victim, citing confidentiality reasons. Davis said the girls parents contacted the Siskiyou County Sheriffs Department Tuesday morning after learning that their daughter was missing. The parents told investigators the girl was likely with Schmidt, Davis said. "They were definitely acquainted and the family was aware of that, Davis said of Schmidts relationship with the girl. He declined to be more specific. The sheriffs department handed the case over to the district attorneys office to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, Davis said. Investigators with the district attorneys office detained Schmidt at his home. The girl was not with him at the time, Davis said. Schmidt apparently resigned Tuesday from the sheriffs department, where he has been a deputy since February 1993. Davis said it was not immediately clear whether the sheriffs department accepted Schmidts resignation. Schmidt was lodged at the Siskiyou County Jail late Tuesday.
