Stream monitors requested By MARK FREEMAN SHADY COVE -- Two local watershed councils are conducting another set of water-quality monitoring of Rogue River basin streams. Volunteers are needed to help gather data on portions of upper Rogue streams along stretches of private land where previous monitoring programs have typically not been surveyed regularly. Volunteers will attend a series of training sessions on basic water-quality testing methods. They test for temperature, alkalinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, ortho phosphates and conductivity. Some sites will include flow levels. In 1998, 14 stations -- six on Little Butte Creek and eight in various other upper Rogue streams -- were monitored. The volunteer monitoring program is funded by the Governor's Watershed Enhancement Board, the Medford Water Commission and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. BEND -- The Oregon Hunters Association raised a record $28,000 to benefit big game and their habitat during the association's 16th annual state convention May 15 in Bend. In a special rolling auction at the convention, the OHA raised $15,000 from its chapters as well as its individual members to fund a bighorn sheep transplant next year in Hells Canyon. The bighorn program is an extension of a similar transplant of 16 bighorns from Alberta, Canada, to Hells Canyon last February. That program's $16,000 cost was paid for by the OHA's Rogue Valley Chapter, and the herd was officially named for the chapter. The organization also honored several individuals and chapters as part of the OHA's annual awards program: Citizen Landowner of the Year: Lee Bradshaw, Eagle Point. Chapter of the Year: Union County. Member of the Year, Wildlife: Jim Ward, LaGrande. Member of the Year, Organization: Chris Solomon, Klamath Falls. Conservationist of the Year: Mike Nunn, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge. Jack Burtt TIP Award: Raymond Mitchell. Corporate Landowner of the Year: Morgrass Grazing Association, Ione. Special Recognition Awards: Jim Churchill, Tioga Chapter; Tony Heckard, Pioneer Chapter; OHA Board Chairman Bob Webber, Rogue Valley Chapter; Al and Deb Elkins, OHA lobbyists.
