Henley rallies past Phoenix KLAMATH FALLS - Perennial Skyline Conference volleyball champion Henley nearly met its match Thursday in the league-opener against Phoenix. The Hornets lost the first game 16-14, then had to rally from deficits in the second and third games, winning 15-9 and 15-7, respectively. "Both of those last two games were much closer than the scores indicated," said Henley coach Chuck Shannon. "It was a back-and-forth war in both of them." Phoenix led 9-7 in the second game before the Hornets finally pulled even and passed the visitors. Same with the final game, when the Pirates took a 7-5 lead but couldn't stem the Hornets. "It took us forever to tie them," said Shannon, "then we slowly pulled away. There were tons of sideouts. It was a marathon. Phoenix played just great defense. (Phoenix coach Tom) Murphy has done just a phenomenal job with those guys. In four years they've just gotten better every year." Henley, which upped its overall record to 6-0, wasn't too bad itself. Middle Staci Maupin recorded 27 kills and "just carried us down the stretch," said Shannon. Sam Young added 12 kills. Setter Katherine Stock was 22 of 22 serving and notched 43 assists. ROGUE RIVER 15-15, NORTH VALLEY 11-13 - At Merlin, Rogue River held off a late charge by the Knights to secure the Skyline Conference victory. North Valley trailed 10-4 in the second game before taking the lead at 13-12. Undaunted, Rogue River regained the lead and closed out the Knights. Whitney Coston had nine kills and three blocks for North Valley (3-3, 1-1 Skyline), while Alaina Renius added three blocks and six kills. MAZAMA 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 9-9 - At Klamath Falls, Krystal Lawrence and Lindsey English led the way as Mazama opened Skyline Conference play with a win. Lawrence and English both had a team-high four kills, with Lawrence also leading the way in blocks with six. Megan Britton stood out defensively for the Vikings (1-0). LAKEVIEW 15-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 2-0 - At Cave Junction, Frances Hartman was 14-for-16 on serves, and Jess Childress had five kills as Lakeview coasted past the Cougars. The Honkers (7-0, 2-0 Skyline) used their service game to keep Illinois Valley out of rhythm.
