The top-ranked Comets had three champions and three runners-up en route to 221 points. Roseburg was second with 149.5. "I thought the kids did a real good job," said Crater coach Greg Haga. "We beat Roseburg by 70 points, and they’re wrestling real well right now. "It was good for us to see quality of competition and come out on top." Crook County (141.5), Newberg (128.5) and Glencoe (126) rounded out the top five teams. Crater 119-pounder Bryson Gutches pinned Roseburg’s Mark Beavers at 4:28 to win the championship. Nate Gipson of Crater defeated Derek Bratemay of Sprague, 8-3, to claim the 130-pound title. The Comets’ 140-pounder, Jeremy McLaughlin, held off Steve Schantin of Camby, 6-4, in the title match. Jeremy Firestone (112), Ron Lee (152) and Taylor Wilkerson (275) finished second for Crater, while Chase Maloney (135) and Brandon Rauls (215) were third. Swimming ROSEBURGDOMINATESSOC THREE-WAY — At Roseburg, the Roseburg boys and girls swim teams dominated against Ashland and Eagle Point. Roseburg’s Patrick O’Neil won both the 100-meter butterfly (53.53) and 200 individual medley (1:58.58). Ashland’s Aaron Nelson won the 100 backstroke (1:04.40) and the 100 freestyle (51.15). In girls action, Ashland’s Michelle Smith was a double winner, claiming both the 50 freestyle (28.03) and the 100 freestyle (1:0078). RECORDS SET — At Ashland, District 4 swimmers set four meet records at the district invitational at the Southern Oregon University pool. Jeff Stone of Phoenix clocked a 1:02.55 to set a record in the 100-yard backstroke, eclipsing the old time of 1:03.81. Phoenix’s Kelsey Nelson set a record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.65, beating the old mark of 2:29.83 by nearly six seconds. Nelson also set the standard in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.59. The Phoenix girls 400-yard freestyle relay put its names in the books, clocking 4:15.80. The team is comprised of Kimbra Chizek, Jessica Porter, Maggie Morefield and Nelson.
