The Applegate Adaptive Management Area serves as model of community success, having brought local people together to work toward long-term solutions involving timber yields, fire resiliency, wildlife habitat, recreation and clean water. Eliminating the Adaptive Management Area in the Applegate is a sign from the BLM that they are not interested in public input. We should preserve the AMA and all other special areas as a designated area in which the BLM must use a collaborative, community-based decision-making process. As citizens and neighbors we have the right to help guide actions that affect our lives and livelihoods. Dean Hawn Jacksonville Is this equitable? Our four-employee, family-held Oregon "C" corporation paid 8.5 percent in Oregon corporate income tax on its taxable income in 2015. If I read their 2015 annual report correctly, Lithia Motors, number 482 in the Fortune 500, paid approximately 0.008 percent. When voting in November on Measure 97, ask yourself if this equitable. We are relatively new to the area, and appreciated this well-written and excellent background piece on what our brave and hard-working firefighters endure on our behalf. Dorian Hastings Talent The bully wins Once again the schoolyard bully wins out and most of the kids stand afraid to stop it. The bully in Ashland’s yard is the OSF. They were not stopped due to their economic clout and a fear of upsetting the local thought police. Shame on the OSF for their petty political correctness, public shaming and financial blackmail of Judi Honoré. To play the role they have in driving someone out of business, (either financially or emotionally) limiting their freedom of speech is unconscionable, and is unacceptable in a free society. This political correctness and misuse of economic power likely is playing a role in the rise of Donald Trump. Like many of his supporters (I am not) I am tired of being told how to think. Like it or not, both the KKK and Black Lives Matter have equal rights of speech. A few weeks ago I loaned Judi one of my banned books to put in her window. I wish I had more. I suggest as penance the OSF present Othello next season with teaching groups using it to discuss the effects of bullying. That play is used across the country with that goal.
