Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 6, 2005 Medford man killed in Foothill Road head-on collision By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A Medford man was killed Wednesday after his pick-up truck crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a car on Foothill Road northeast of Medford. Mitchell Jay Green, of the 700 block of Belmont Street, was traveling north on Foothill Road at around 2:32 p.m. when his 1999 Mazda pickup crossed the divider and struck a 2004 Kia Sorento, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said. Green’s pickup left the road and came to rest on its driver’s side in the ditch. He was trapped in the wreck and was freed by Medford Fire and Jackson County Fire District 3 rescue crews, Winters said. Green, 45, died aboard a Mercy Flights ambulance en route to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Winters said. The Kia’s driver, Susan Louise Huntley, 49, of Eagle Point was also transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where she was remained late Wednesday in serious condition, officials said. Advertisement Foothill Road between Corey and Vilas roads was blocked for about two hours while crews removed wreckage and a sheriff’s traffic team reconstructed the accident, Winters said. Winters estimates that Green’s Mazda was cruising between 45 and 55 mph when it crossed into oncoming traffic. Speed, however, was not a factor in the cause of the crash, Winters said. The investigation indicates that Green’s attention was not on the road, Winters said. "Evidence at the scene indicates (Green) was distracted," Winters said. "He went across the double dividing line without touching the brake." Winters described the traffic on the narrow two-lane road yesterday as heavy, which is typical for Foothill Road during the afternoon. Winters said the Rogue Valley’s rising population has contributed to the increase of traffic on secondary roads. "A lot of folks heading south take Foothill instead of Highway 62," Winters said. "It’s just a really busy road, especially at 2:30." The crash remains under investigation.
