Kappell smoked a 69th-minute rocket into the far-post side-netting for the difference in Crater’s 2-1 victory over North Medford in Southern Oregon Conference boys soccer action Saturday. The Comets (3-2-2, 1-1 SOC), coming off an SOC-opening loss at Grants Pass, needed a victory badly, and they got it through Kappell’s heroics, an early goal from Erich Hangartner and a few spectacular saves from Tomas Iboa. "He was the player of the game," Black Tornado head coach Rich Garcia said of Iboa, Crater’s senior goalkeeper. Josh Smith tapped a sixth-minute free kick to Hangartner, and the senior central midfielder wrapped a right-footed shot around North’s wall and into the near-post netting from 25 yards away. Advertisement "It was sweet," said Comets head coach Chris Gallegos. "We’ve used (the play) almost every game, and it’s gotten through, but the touch (on the shot) has been just a little off or something. It finally worked." The Tornado (3-4-2, 1-1 SOC) responded four minutes later, as Luis Cabrera drew a penalty kick, stepped to the spot and finished. Later in the half, Iboa stymied Cabrera on a point-blank opportunity and also turned away Richard Snapp from close range. "If he doesn’t make those two saves in the first half, we’re up 3-1, and it’s a totally different game," Garcia said. Kappell’s game-winner came from the right side after a loose ball bounced his way. His shot curved into the left side of the goal. "It was an in-step drive," said Gallegos, whose team’s victory over North a year ago was Crater’s first-ever. "It was beautiful. Basically, what we’ve been really focusing on is our finishing." The Comets fashioned a 20-15 edge in shots. SOUTH MEDFORD 4, KLAMATH UNION 2 — At Klamath Falls, fourth-ranked South Medford used two goals and an assist from Corey O’Neill to pick up its 14th straight SOC victory. The Panthers’ last conference defeat came at Klamath Union on Oct. 6, 2001. South (7-0-1, 2-0 SOC) made sure that wouldn’t happen again by outshooting the Pelicans (2-5, 0-2), 19-5, and rolling to a 4-0 lead before two late KU scores. Scott Marlow headed home O’Neill’s corner kick in the ninth minute for the opening goal. O’Neill finished breakaways in the 40th and 59th minutes, while Eric Connors found the net off a Bret Hamilton assist in the 49th. Dusty Harmon took a Drew Baldwin pass and ended the shutout in the 77th, then Mario Barajas took advantage of an errant South back pass in the 78th. ASHLAND 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Grants Pass, Ashland dominated en route to the SOC win. The Grizzlies (4-3, 2-0 SOC) outshot Grants Pass 18-5 and maintained a lead from early on. Thomas Souzra headed home a cross from Fabian Garcia-Flores for a 1-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. Ricky Ferguson found the net in the 27th minute for a 2-0 lead at the break, and Garcia-Flores took his turn in the 74th to produce the final margin. ROSEBURG 9, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Roseburg, Erik Fabrizius scored four goals and Johnson Reed three to lead Roseburg in the SOC contest. The Indians (4-4, 1-1 SOC) also got goals from Collin Soderberg-Chase and Nick Romano. Girls SOUTH MEDFORD 5, KLAMATH UNION 0 — Emma McConnell scored two goals and eighth-ranked South Medford used a 23-3 advantage in shots during an SOC home victory. Kelsey Corbin opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute. McConnell scored back-to-back tallies in the 10th and 16th minutes, and Jill Walport put the Panthers (5-2, 2-0 SOC) up 4-0 at the half with a goal in the 28th minute. Jessica James also scored for South, while Amber Stevens assisted on two goals. GRANTS PASS 1, ASHLAND 0 — At Ashland, Jakki Pilcher’s near-post header off a Kelli Roots corner kick in the 66th minute was the difference at North Mountain Park. Grants Pass shrugged off finishing problems to stay unbeaten at 6-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the SOC. Ashland, fortified by a couple nice saves by goalkeeper Aly Yant and the defensive efforts of central fullbacks Laura Newton and Tess Golling, fell to 3-4-1 and 0-2 in the SOC. ROSEBURG 5, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Eagle Point, Carli Godard scored three times and Roseburg (4-4, 2-0 SOC) held Eagle Point without a shot on goal during the SOC victory. Godard scored goals in the eighth, 33rd and 49th minutes. Val Groshong put the Indians up 2-0 with a goal in the 15th and Kayla Schroeder converted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute for the Indians, who built a 23-0 advantage in shots.
