EVENT Contests, carnival will help 'Drive Out Drugs' Sept. 9-10 Festival includes competitions among fire and police departments Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 31, 2016 at 5:03 PM Posted Aug. 31, 2016 at 5:03 PM » Social News Local report The third annual Drive Out Drugs Recovery Festival & Carnival will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10 at Harry & David Field in the U.S. Cellular Community Park in south Medford. Put on by Foundations for Recovery, the event is designed to raise awareness of the damaging effects of drug and alcohol addiction on youth and families. It will help raise money to fund development projects, such as a youth program called “Step Up, Speak Out, Stand Firm,” which provides support for people suffering from addiction. The program includes youth mentoring, teen and adult one-on-one counseling, outpatient treatment, family support and basic skills training. The festival will start with a Battle of the Badges home run derby fundraiser at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Harry & David Field. Three members each from Medford police, Central Point police, Fire District No. 5 and Fire District No. 3 will compete in a long-ball competition. The event is free and includes raffle prizes, a free hot dog and drink and a silent auction. Saturday, Sept. 10, will continue the officer competition, with “Guns & Hoses III,” a four-game softball tournament featuring police and fire department personnel, including the defending champion Medford Police Department. In conjunction with the game, local organizations will provide information about addiction recovery services and healthy alternatives to drugs. The Saturday events, which run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., will include a family carnival with booths, pony rides, a bounce house, water maze, dunk tank and a variety of games. There will be food from local vendors and music by local bands. Spartan Gym will also participate in the festival, with exhibition boxing Friday night and teaching all day Saturday. Among the organizations supporting the events are Redemption Ridge, Rogue Retreat, Medford Gospel Mission, Young Marines, Jackson Care Connect and the Medford Rogues.
