The sole bid on the 5.23-acre parcel matches the minimum bid required. However, bids are still being taken in the written auction that began March 21. Offers can be made by fax, mail or on the Internet. The property is at 1319 E. McAndrews Road one block east of Biddle Road on the east side of Poplar Drive. The name of the bidder, posted only as "luther" on the General Services Administration Web site, is not being released, said Lisa Roundtree, a GSA employee working in the agency’s Real Property Disposal Division. Advertisement "We do not give out the bidder’s name or any information on them," she wrote in an e-mail response to a Mail Tribune inquiry. Although the end of the bidding period hasn’t been decided, it is expected soon, said Patty Burel, spokeswoman for the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. "The GSA will consult with the Forest Service and determine when bidding will end," Burel said, adding, "We’re pleased we have a bid now that meets the minimum price." Funds raised from the sale will be used to relocate the forest supervisor’s office now in downtown Medford to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Medford BLM District office building at 3040 Biddle Road in Medford, she said. Congress approved plans to sell the property and relocate the headquarters to the BLM in the fall of 1998. The move is intended to allow the agencies to serve the public better while providing more opportunities for the agencies to work together and cut costs. Plans call for remodeling the BLM building to house employees from both agencies. The Forest Service acquired the McAndrews site in the 1930s at a time when the immediate area was surrounded by orchards. The surrounding property is now developed into a retail and professional corridor. The McAndrews parcel includes a huge warehouse, automotive shop, radio shop, survey office, covered parking and plenty of storage. The parcel, which includes six administrative buildings, was appraised at $3.8 million in January of 2004, officials said. The property is being sold in a process similar to an oral auction, although all the bids must be written. Online bidding is available at the GSA’s real property disposal site at auctionrp.com/auctions2 on the Web. Bidders can find out when new bids come in and what the high bids are by checking the Web site or a 24-hour message line at 253-931-7962. A bidding package can be obtained by contacting the GSA at 253-931-7547 or the forest headquarters at 858-2200. A package also can be obtained on the Web site.
