Led by a 1-over-par 73 from Josh Wu, St. Mary’s totaled 314 strokes to take a three-shot advantage over the Challengers entering today’s final round. The Crusaders are seeking to qualify for next week’s state tournament and vie for a record fifth straight state championship. Jeremy Wu (76), Brandon Chun (79) and Matt Johnson (86) also did their part to put St. Mary’s in prime position. For Cascade Christian, which finished runner-up to St. Mary’s at last year’s state tournament, Jake Quast equaled Josh Wu’s score of 73 to put them tied atop the competition for individual champion. The Challengers also turned in solid rounds by Max Davis (76), Ben Quast (83) and Michael Clark (85) to finish with a 317 team total. Rounding out the team scores after Monday’s first round were Oakridge (325), Bandon (347), Gold Beach (376), Coquille (383), Lakeview (386) and Illinois Valley (426). After today’s final round, the top three teams and top five individuals advance to next week’s Class 3A/2A/1A state tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. 5A SPECIAL DISTRICT 2 REGIONALS: At Redmond, Eagle Point bunched its scores together in the low 80s to finish in seventh place after Day 1 of the tournament on the Ridge Course at Eagle Crest Resort. Eagle Point’s Troy Jordan carded a 9-over-par 81 in rainy and cold conditions to pace his team. Following closely behind were teammates Zach Henley (82), Kyler DeVore (83) and Ethan DeVore (85). Bend’s Ryan DeCastilhos leads the individuals after posting a 73, while Summit holds a slight advantage over Bend in the team competition, 304 to 306. Mike Piazzini shot an 88 to pace Crater, while Ben Burkholder’s 95 was tops for Ashland. The top five teams and top 10 individuals advance to next week’s 5A state tournament at Emerald Valley Golf & Resort in Creswell. CRATER (446): Mike Piazzini 43-45—88, Brenden Dismukes 55-60—115, Steven Renfro 65-56—121, Ty James 64-58—122. 4A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 REGIONALS: At Eagle Point, Phoenix landed in eighth place after scoring a 456 in the first round of the two-day regional tournament at Eagle Point Golf Club. Marshfield leads the eight-team tournament with a 329, while Mazama’s Bryce Wortman sits atop the leaderboard after shooting an even-par 72. The event sends the top two teams and top five individuals to next week’s state tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. TEAM SCORES: Marshfield 329, Hidden Valley 356, North Valley 358, Henley 367, North Bend 370, Klamath Union 375, Brookings 410, Phoenix 456. Boys Tennis MWL DISTRICTS: At Roseburg, Ashland singles player Mischa Kirby was joined by a pair of Grizzly doubles teams in qualifying for the Class 5A state tournament with quarterfinals wins in the Midwestern League district tournament at Stewart Park. Kirby earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over a Ridgeview player to advance the No. 2 seed into Friday’s semifinals, which will played on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene. In doubles, Ashland’s second-seeded tandem of Rox Rogers and Nur Shelton advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over a Ridgeview pairing. Unseeded David Lee and Kai Weston of Ashland also qualified for state by pulling an upset in their semifinal over a Marist duo. Ashland’s doubles teams will square off against each other in Friday’s semifinals. 4A/3A/2A/1A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 TOURNAMENT: At Redmond, Cascade Christian’s Kallen Rechberg and Brandon Winter made a run into the quarterfinal round of the doubles main draw but fell short against the No. 2 seed on the final day of the Special District 3 Tournament. Klamath Union’s Hayden Lam and Leo Dosek topped Rechberg and Winter, 6-1, 6-2. Cascade’s duo earned a 6-3, 2-6 (10-8) victory over North Bend’s James Farlow and Lucas Parvin in their second match of the event. The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to next week’s state tournament. Nathan Moir also played for the Challengers but was upended in the opening round by Brandt Hamner of North Bend, 6-4, 6-3. Girls Tennis MWL DISTRICTS: At Eugene, Ashland’s top-seeded doubles team of Vika O’Brien and Anne Kim dominated their quarterfinal match at the Midwestern League district tournament to earn a repeat trip to the Class 5A state tourney, while second-seeded singles player Ashley Knecht was equally impressive at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club in also advancing to state as a guaranteed top-four finisher. O’Brien and Kim teamed to score a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Marist’s Courtney Alldridge and Ashley Alldridge and will next face No. 4 seeds Ellie Cross and Margo Werner of Marist in Friday’s district semifinals on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene. Knecht managed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Marist’s Dale Helvoigt in her first match and then cruised past Springfield’s Brynne Webb, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Knecht will next face Marist’s Renee Lee, who is the only unseeded singles player to make it into the final four. With four semifinalists, Marist leads the team competition with 38 points, followed by Ridgeview (20), Ashland (16), Churchill (14), North Eugene (8), Springfield (6) and Redmond (4).
