Man dead after Butte Falls shooting Thursday Oct 13, 2016 at 1:56 PM Oct 13, 2016 at 5:01 PM Nick Morgan Mail Tribune @mtcrimebeat A man with a history of gun violence was shot and killed in the woods outside Butte Falls Wednesday night, and he was armed when he died, police said. Dick Laurence Zoomer Daniels, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8:14 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.  No arrests have been made, and police have not identified the person who shot Daniels, though police said the shooter "is not a threat to the community." The Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit has interviewed all parties involved, but detectives are still investigating the case, the release said. Witnesses or others who may have information regarding the shooting are asked to contact the sheriff's department at 541-774-6800 and reference case number 16-20742. Daniels previously had served prison time for manslaughter after accidentally shooting a friend of his, Jeremiah Coughtry, 30, in 2005. Daniels was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for the shooting, which occurred when Daniels fired three shots in an attempt to stop a group of people who were threatening Coughtry with baseball bats. One of the shots hit Coughtry in the back. — Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter at @MTCrimeBeat.
