Candle is the suspected culprit in mobile home fire SHADY COVE -- A fire possibly caused by a candle left burning in a bedroom destroyed a double-wide mobile home Monday evening. No one was injured in the blaze, but it caused about $80,000 damage to the house and belongings, said Shady Cove Fire Chief Bob Miller. "The outside walls are standing and part of the roof, but the rest of it is gone," Miller said. The home at 21180 Highway 62 is owned by Skip and Gail Blake, Miller said. The Blakes also own the Shady Cove Pharmacy. At 5:27 p.m. Monday, Gail Blake called 911 and told the dispatcher that there was a fire in the bedroom of her home. The dispatcher told the woman to get out of the house. Firefighters arrived on scene and found the home engulfed in flames, Miller said. "There was fire visible from every opening or from every window," he said. Skip Blake arrived at the house shortly after firefighters. Crews used nearly 5,000 gallons of water fighting the blaze. In Shady Cove, most homes are hooked up to water through wells and the fire department carries water for fires in their water tenders. Eighteen firefighters, police and medical personnel were on hand at the blaze for more than four hours. Miller said that firefighters believe the fire was caused by the candle in the bedroom. But they still needed to speak with Gail Blake. "She was pretty well shaken up," Miller said. "I didn't get to talk to her." Miller said that the Blakes live by themselves at the house. They have a dog and three cats. Gail Blake had said that the animals had made it out of the home, but Miller said that all of the animals could not be found late Monday night.
